Welcome to the Berglund Center for Internet studies

The Berglund Center at Pacific University facilitates both theoretical discussion and practical action relating to the impact of the Internet upon individuals and their communities worldwide. We study the effects of the Internet on the ways we work, communicate, teach, and learn. The Berglund Center for Internet Studies was endowed by a generous gift from Pacific University alumni Drs. Mary and James Berglund of La Jolla, California.

Upcoming Roundtable May 3, 2013

Transforming Educational Culture through Online Language Learning, presented by Dr. Carl Falsgraf, will discuss how disruptive innovations - including the steam engine, automobiles, and computers - are first seen as incremental innovations that enhance existing systems. This is especially true in the realm of online learning. The vast majority of current online offerings retain the trappings of traditional classrooms: lectures, quizzes, and grades. The disruptive potential of online learning lies not in the mere inclusion of the Internet but in the facilitation of socially constructed learning networks that provide a space for peers to interact with their domain of study in unique ways. These learning networks radically redefine the roles of teacher and student, particularly in performative fields such as music, counseling, machine operation and - the focus of this presentation - language learning.

Diane Duane’s Omnitopia Dawn

The Berglund Center always offered me great opportunities to learn more about the Internet around me, so when they suggested Diane Duane’s Omnitopia Dawn, I only had to read the synopsis to be once again enchanted. I was not familiar with Duane’s many science fiction and fantasy novels, but my interest in the Internet and related technology’s impact on the way we conduct our 21st century lives made Omnitopia seem like something I’d be very interested in reading about.

Directed Reading: A strategy for teaching students to read mathematics

Getting students to read the textbook is one of the major hurdles I face in teaching undergraduate mathematics. Students who do read the new material before hearing a lecture on it tell me that it is a tremendous help in understanding the lecture. Yet so few students do this.
