The Berglund Center for Internet Studies at Pacific University requests proposals for two Berglund Fellowships for 2007-08. The purpose of the fellowships is to support innovative work that increases our understanding of the effects of the Internet on the ways we work, communicate, teach, and learn. One grant will be awarded internally at Pacific University, one will be awarded to an external scholar.

Fellowships can be awarded for either theoretical research or for applied research. Fellowships might be for theoretical research in the sense that they would be based in research rather than in applied or teaching activities. They might be studies of applications or impacts of the Internet such as have been done by past Berglund Fellows. Fellowships for applied research will be granted to those reporting upon innovative or advanced uses of the Internet or other forms of electronic communication within an educational or classroom context.

These Fellowships will be for stipends of $3500.00.

The due date for applications is October 1, 2006, or until all grants are awarded. Inquiries are welcome after October 1, 2006.

An application should be 2-3 pages in length and should include many of the following elements:

The title of the proposal.
A statement of methodology.
A statement as to the importance of the research or practice. Is it a useful demonstration that would be picked up by others? In what environments or contexts? What impact might it have on the current understanding of the topic area?
Relevant bibliography sufficient to show a good awareness of the current state of the field for the theoretical work proposed.
Or bibliography to show a good awareness of current practices or relevant materials pertaining to the application for applied research.
A description of necessary equipment and how that equipment will be provided, if relevant.
A description of assessment processes. That is, how is the effectiveness of your research or practice to be demonstrated?
How will your project be reported? (See below.)
A full vita should be appended to the application.

Successful applicants will be named as Berglund Fellows for the period 2007-2008 and have access to the facilities of the Center, including student assistance where necessary or useful.

All projects should be reported upon in written form (multimedia elements are also welcome) suitable for publication in the e-journal of the Berglund Center, Interface (http://bcis.pacificu.edu/journal/index.php). These submissions can be subjected to peer review conducted by the editorial staff of the Center, or not, as the author wishes.
