Configuring Your Web Browser to Protect Your Computer

In general, at Interface we have not emphasized technical fixes to security problems facing computer users. However, the recent rapid increase in browser exploits (http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Browser_exploit) is troubling, and we think our readers might well pay attention to them.

The regular releases from US-CERT, the United States Computer Emergency Readiness Team, tend to be very complex and usually are aimed at systems administrators in enterprises or institutions. However, we think this one, "Securing Your Web Browser" by Will Dormann and Jason Rafail, well worth reading. It is found at: http://www.us-cert.gov/reading_room/securing_browser/

It is rather lengthy in the Adobe Reader download and might scare some readers off. But after introductory remarks, it leads to a very nice analysis of how to protect particular web browsers, with abundant graphics that make the process simple to understand and to implement. A Firefox user, for example, can skip over information dealing with Explorer or Safari. There is also a series of references at the close that could lead an interested reader deeper into the topic.

This is a weekly RSS feed from Pacific University's Berglund Center for Internet Studies. If you are reading it in other than an rss format, please go to: http://bcis.pacificu.edu/journal/about-rss.php and learn how to utilize this dynamic application.
