Sharing Information and Building Community: Education and the Internet
Mark Szymanski, Pacific University
NOTICE: "Enhancing Computer Use in the Hispanic Community", a project of The Berglund Center for Internet Studies, has been funded by Oregon Campus Compact <http://www.compact.org/>, part of a national coalition of more than 750 College and University Presidents committed to the civic purposes of higher education. This initiative will bring together leaders of Oregon Hispanic community groups with students, teachers, and staff in the Service Learning, Spanish language, and Academic Computing areas of Pacific University, under the leadership of the Berglund Center for Internet Studies (BCIS). The results of this networking meeting will be an understanding of the match between the needs of the Hispanic community with the surplus computing resources and students and staff of Pacific University during summer months.
Key partners involved in this initiative include such Hispanic community based organizations as: Desarollo Intergral de la Familia (Mrs. Lorena Connally, Director), the Oregon Human Development Corporation (Mr. Jose Estrada, Director), The Centro Cultural (Mr. Sabino Sardineta, Executive Director), and The Hispanic Chamber of Commerce. From the University, leaders will include Steven Boone and Jeffrey Barlow of the Berglund Center for Internet Studies; Alfonso Lopez, Director of Community Partnerships; Ellen Hastay, Pacific University Service Learning Coordinator; and Pacific university students with dual capabilities in Spanish language and computing.
