- We are not tolerant of plagarism and do check for it as a part of our editing process.
- We pay one hundred dollars for individual articles.
Length
Submissions should be no more than five pages in length, single-spaced, including all notes and references. This should be about one thousand to fifteen hundreds words, excluding notes and references.
Typography
- For Internet publication, use a sans serif font—it is easier to read on a computer screen. We prefer Verdana.
- Use only one space after the end of a sentence.
- Use italics to emphasize words, not bold or capitals.
- Enclose article titles in quotations, but italicize book titles.
- Do not underline.
Punctuation
- When separating words in a series, use a comma before the "and."
- Use a colon when writing the time of day but not on the hour. 5:15 p.m., but 2 p.m.
- Use real quotation marks—not the ticks that symbolize inch or foot marks. The same applies to apostrophes.
- Do not use an apostrophe before the "s" when referring to decades: 1950s.
- Periods and commas are always placed inside quotation marks.
- Use hyphens, en dashes and em dashes appropriately.
- Hyphen (-) is only for breaks in words or lines. It is the one you know from the keyboard, "-."
- En dash (–) is used between words indicating a duration; from 6–9 tonight.
- Em dash (—) is used when you would use a semi-colon in writing—it separates independent clauses not connected by a conjunction.
Capitalization
Capitalize the following:
- All proper nouns, months, days of the week and holidays.
- Names of sections of the country but not directions: the Southwest, but she walked west.
- Titles of academic courses, but not school subjects.
- "Internet"
- "Web," "Web site" and "World Wide Web" ("www" is an acceptable abbreviation.)
Abbreviations
- Always write out acronyms the first time they are used, even if they seem obvious. Put the acronym in parenthesis.
- Abbreviate Jr. and Sr. following a name, but do not use a comma between the last name and Jr. or Sr.
Numbers
- Always use numerals for ages, money, percentages, days of the month, degrees, hours of the day, dimensions, scores, room numbers, page or chapter numbers and street numbers.
- Except for those in the preceding rule, spell out single-digit numbers and use numerals for numbers 10 and greater.
- Do not begin a sentence with a numeral.
Internet Terms
Should appear as the following:
- log in, log off, log out (when they are used as verbs)
- login, logoff, logout (when they are used as nouns or adjectives)
- e-mail
- online
- home page
- webmaster, webcast
- Internet
Citing Sources
- Articles for Internet publication should use endnotes in the form: [1]
- Follow Chicago Manual of Style.
- When you use electronic sources please cite the date on which you accessed the site. Follow The Columbia Guide to Online Style.
- If at all possible, include links to external sites in endnotes instead of in the text. Please take care in testing links before including them.
Notes
- Endnotes are both acceptable and encouraged.
- Keep them brief and limited to necessary information.
Manuscript Submission
- If a manuscript is to be peer-reviewed, remove all information which might be used in identifying the author before submitting.
- Author should provide an e-mail address for The Berglund Center to contact them, which is reliable and constant.
- When an article is approved for publication, the author will need to provide a personal bio, including a digital headshot. This bio should also include links to previous work that has been published with us.
Please note: The BCIS Journal welcomes inquiries on all issues. E-mail requests as to our interests in particular submissions are welcome at barlowj@pacificu.edu and will be answered promptly.
