Welcome to the 2008 Berglund Summer Institute

July 13th - 17th, 2008.

The Berglund Center for Internet Studies at Pacific University proudly announces our first Summer Institute! This year's conference, entitled The Wisdom and Madness of Crowds, runs from July 13th - 17th, 2008. This Summer Institute will provide an opportunity for educators, computer professionals, and business people to actively participate in discussions concerning the promise and problems of World Wide Web 2.0 applications like Wikipedia, MySpace, and YouTube.

Topics to be discussed are:
Intellectual property
Pod Casting
Teaching with Web 2.0

The current stage of the development of the World Wide Web, often labeled "Web 2.0," is dynamic and controversial. Web 2.0 consists largely of content developed by consumers for consumers, but created by many different authors and often distributed across many different sites. While Wikipedia and other "social" sites are most controversial, the number of cheap or free applications permitting almost anybody to develop or participate in distributed projects increase daily. Are such sites an important stage in democracy permitting wisdom to be accumulated from thousands of contributors? Or do they drive out expert knowledge and encourage the spread of inaccurate, misleading, or downright dangerous information?

This Berglund Center for Internet Studies Summer Institute for 2008 will examine these questions, led by experts from across the United States.

Participation space is limited; for priority consideration, we must have your completed registration on file by May 30th, 2008.
